How can I get a job in digital marketing and what do I do for a living?

A few weeks ago I did a post on my Digital Marketing Diploma with Digital Marketing London and thought I would explain a bit more about what I do for a living! It's funny because my blog and experience in that and social media brought me to my current job, just proof that investment in digital marketing is no longer an option but a necessity for companies.

I handle the ecommerce and digital marketing for Brodie & Stone and its brands, which ranges from creating content for all the social channels, creating new websites and adding new features to managing our online PR and influencer campaigns. I've been at Brodie & Stone for over 2 years now, and it's definitely flown by! The company previously had no online strategy, so it was starting from scratch when I first began.

So how did I get it?

A few of you long-term readers (hey!) may know that after taking my A-Levels at sixth form, that instead of going to uni I went to Brighton City College and studied Journalism. Unfortunately the course doesn't run anymore, but you can find loads of NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) accredited courses across the UK. Whilst I studied, I took up two internships at local magazines, writing content for their websites and in print and also handling their social media accounts. Once I had my journalism diploma, I applied for jobs left right and center, anything from journalism to PR to digital marketing. Brodie & Stone were offering an 8 month contract for a Digital Marketing Assistant and after 8 months, they saw the benefit in digital marketing and kept me on.

What qualifications do I have?

As already mentioned, I'm have a NCTJ Gold Standard Diploma in Journalism, which is the highest you can get. But in terms of digital marketing, I recently took part in the Digital Marketing Diploma with Digital Marketing London, which is DMI (Digital Marketing Institute) accredited, which you can take an exam afterwards to earn your diploma. I'll hopefully be taking my exam soon, so wish me luck! Because digital marketing is such an evolving subject, for example Snapchat has only been around for about 3 years and is still so new, it's hard for universities to teach the subject.

What can you do to get a job in digital marketing?

There's no set formula, trust me, I had no idea two years ago that I would be working in the industry. It's extraordinary just how far it's come and changed over the years and how brands are now leveraging it. Actively using social media yourself and showing that you can grow a following and community is a big plus and demonstrating that you're creating and promoting your own content too. There are bootcamp courses in digital marketing, as well as online classes and resources which you can use to read up on. If you know a local community which could do with help with their digital marketing then offer your services and get extra experience!

Are you interested in a career in digital marketing?

OOTD: Mustard Roll-Neck and Smart Trousers

Coat: Warehouse
Roll-Neck: Primark
Trousers: ASOS
Shoes, Scarf and Belt: New Look
Bag: Accessorize

It's not often that you'll find my trouser choice not a pair of jeans, trousers always remind me of school and having to spend ages finding the perfect pair to go with your school uniform! I used to get these awful styles that really kicked flare out and were made of stretchy elastic that always used to loose it's stretch and all the elastic would then come out. Thankfully I have now moved on from those 2000's styles and opted for a slim-fit ASOS pair, which are my lazy-but-smart outfit because you can wear them with anything.

Roll-neck jumpers are a must-do when your office is like a fridge first thing in the morning. Primark have a really great and affordable selection of roll-neck jumpers at the moment. I either prefer thin knit and slim-fit styles which I can tuck into skirts or trousers or baggy and chunky styles that I can wear when it gets really cold! If there's ever a style of jumper which you can rely on each year, it's the roll-neck jumper.

What's your favourite winter jumper?

How To Get Into The Christmassy Mood

For all those people who are yet to get into the Christmassy mood, this is the post for you! Now that Bonfire Night is over and Christmas parties are in the diary, I'm well on my way to getting into the Christmas spirit and here's a few of my favourite things to do this:

1. Music
If you can listen to Do They Know It's Christmas or Fairytale of New York without wanting to singalong, then I'm not even sure you should be reading this post! Specially reserved for this time of year, the list of Christmas themed songs are endless and one of the best ways to get in the festive mood.

2. Shopping
It can be stressful and hard work, but once you find the perfect gift for someone and can picture their face when unwrapping it on Christmas day then it's all worth it. There's so many guides and offers out there that you're spoilt for choice.

3. Films
We have a special tradition of watching the Snowman and Father Christmas on DVD, whilst putting up the Christmas tree every year. Home Alone is a classic film too, Elf always gets me every year but this year the classic films of It's A Wonderful Life and The Miracle on 34th Street are on my to-watch list too.

4. Food
Is there really any other time of year when you get eat pigs in blankets?! Turkey with all the trimmings, cranberry sauce, Bucks Fizz for Christmas morning breakfast and too much chocolate are enough to make you feel Christmassy. Even thinking about it is making me hungry!

5. Friends and Family
Planning the time over Christmas and the New Year to see your family and friends is a sure way to ensure you're festive ready. Whether it's shopping the sales or catching a coffee with a friend you haven't seen in a while, now is the time to start planning.

What makes you feel Christmassy?

Instagram: Coldplay, Blog Events and Christmas Windows

On reflection, 2016 is shaping up to be a much better year than 2015! A few weeks ago I entered a competition to win tickets to see Coldplay at the London Palladium. Just to note that Coldplay have been on my 'must-see-before-I-die' bucketlist since forever and I thought I had no chance of winning tickets... so you can guess what happened next! Coldplay were amazing and because it was in a small venue, it made the experience all the more memorable. Definitely in my top 10 musicians.

I attended my first Thirty Plus Blogs event in collaboration with Caudalie. I've done a full post on 5 Tips For Attending Your First Blog Event, if you want to check that out! I'm getting more and more confident in attending events by myself, it's weird at first because I don't normally know anyone but it forces me to introduce myself to new people.

London is getting so Christmassy right now! All the Christmas lights are up and lit, everyone's doing their present shopping and Fortnum & Mason have open their window displays. I walk past them everyday and you can't help having a peek at them as you go past!

Speaking of Christmas lights, I went down to Brighton a few weekends ago to visit a friend and do some shopping. Brighton is still one of my favourite places to spend my spare time and when it's Christmas time it's the best! I can't wait to visit at night to see all the lights lit up.

You know that dress that's the perfect fit, super cosy and goes with everything you have? This is it. Primark came up trumps with this dress last year and it's been a firm favourite in my wardrobe ever since. Along with my new boots, I wore this in an Outfit Of The Day last week for my brother's 30th birthday party, so make sure you read that post too!

What's been your favourite Christmas moment so far?

OOTD: Primark Knitted Dress and Clarks Boots

Dress: Primark
Boots: Clarks
Coat: Warehouse
Necklace; Accessorize
Scarf: New Look
Bag: Zara

I've been living in this dress for the past few weeks, mainly because it's been freezing cold in the mornings, but with the heating on full blast at work and on the train I end up way too hot by the afternoon. It's a very fine and thin knit in a swing dress style and high neck, so cosy but airy too! I'll pair it with a long necklace and smart black ankle boots, perfect outfit for Sunday afternoon walks too.

I wore this exact outfit a few weeks ago to my brother's 30th birthday party at this house. Knowing that they'll be fireworks and the meal on offer is a slice or two of pizza, I knew a ball gown wouldn't be necessary. These boots are my new going-out boots and I love how comfortable they are, whilst still giving me the height a high heel pair would. You can always rely on Clarks for a quality and smart pair of boots, plus their wide fit and half-sizes are a god-send for my funny feet!

What do you think of this out? Do you love knit dresses too?

The Power Of Lipstick

I'm not your average and every day lipstick wearer. Nudes and tinted lip balms are reserved for working hours, then the weekends it'll be a bright pink and matte finish. But only people who wear lipstick on a regular basis will understand the power of it.

Rarely will I venture out from a nude-pink or a 'my lips but better' shade at work because I'm in my professional mode and a non-attention grabbing lip will keep me focused on my work. When I think about how long it takes me to apply my makeup during the week (about 10 minutes), I prefer to keep my look simple and easy. Lips are always the finishing part for me, but it's the last piece of the puzzle for my face that day.

My love for the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams are well documented (see this post and this one!) and these are the bad boys that come out at the weekend. My lips aren't that big, so wearing and applying a bright colour is tricky and time-consuming, but the confidence boost afterwards is so worth it. Coco Chanel even said "if you're sad, add more lipstick and attack" proof that lipstick is a one-of-a-kind armour. But wearing lipstick does feel like warpaint and that you're never ready to go into battle (aka the queue at the bar) unless you have you favourite shade of red.

Lipstick can me so much more than simply a shade to match your outfit. It's a confidence boost. It's something to cheer you up. It's what makes you you. It's what brings out the best in you.

What does lipstick mean to you?

5 Tips For Attending Your First Blog Event

Ever felt too shy or nervous to RSVP to a blog event? I know the feeling....

Blogging events are becoming more and more frequent, especially collaborating with brands to host special previews and evenings. I recently went to the Thirty Plus Blogs and Caudalie event in Covent Garden and thought I would share my tips for going to your first event and hopefully encourage you to attend yours.

1. Introduce yourself to the host
Besides being polite, saying hello and leaving your details with your host is a great way to break the ice. They may also be able to introduce you to other bloggers at the event too if you've arrived by yourself and explain a more about the event too.

2. Network!
We all know the importance of networking on social media, but it's also crucial to network with other bloggers at events. Creating personal relationships with bloggers is a bonus to blogging and improves your networking skills too.

3. Take Business Cards
Events can get pretty busy and if you're meeting lots of people, it's hard to keep track of names and blog names! I always carry a few business cards in my purse, but keep a stack with you at events to share with people and say hello to those on Twitter afterwards.

4. Take Photos
With all the networking, you can forget to take photos! When I first get to an event and after saying hello to the host, I whip my phone out and take a few photos and remind myself to take more throughout the evening. And remember to share them on Twitter and Instagram as you go too!

5. Don't Be Afraid
Going to your first event can be a scary thing, but everyone is or has been in the same boat as you! Make sure you're prepared, know where the venue is, take business cards and if you want to meet up before with another blogger, send a tweet out with the event hashtag and ask who's around to meet up. I've worked on the other side of these events before and I can tell you that we're just as excited to talk and share our brand with you too!

Thank you to Hayley from London Beauty Queen and Thirty Plus Blog Events and Caudalie for organising the event. It was great to network and meet so many other bloggers and talk all about beauty!

Have you been to a blogging event before? What would your tip be?

OOTD: A Casual Autumn Outfit

Coat: Warehouse
Hat and Scarf: New Look
Top: Primark
Cardigan and Bag: Zara
Jeans: ASOS
Shoes: Topshop
Gloves: Marks & Spencer

There's nothing I like more than wearing a knitted hat, blanket-size scarf and cosy gloves when the leaves turn red and air grows cold. Cliche as it might be (and I'm pretty sure I say the same thing for every season!) but I love it when autumn arrives and I can start getting excited for all the things that come with it.

We've already had Halloween and Bonfire Night, next it's Christmas and celebrating with friends and family into the New Year. I've already ordered my work Christmas party dress, it's this sequin number from Lipsy. I didn't want anything too short or tight, but sequins was a must for me! Anything that sparkles makes me feel so feastive and Christmassy. Wearing wooly hats and massive scarves also makes me feel in the Christmas mood too. I got this scarf as a present from my friend last year and it's so massive that you could wrap yourself up in a blanket!

What outfit makes you feel autumnal?

Things That Have Made Me Happy Recently

I love reading and writing these posts - it really makes you appreciate everything you've got! As the year starts winding down, I do love a good reflection post and the past few weeks have made me so so happy.

The Wedding
My big sister got married! I'm sure she won't mind me sharing this picture of us with our mum, but it's a day that I'll always remember as a very happy one. I cried, laughed, danced and smiled until my face ached and I'll never forget it.

Autumn
I've already taken a bunch of photos of my feet in leaves, but I can't help it! I was driving to Lewes last weekend and going past rows of red, brown and yellow trees with the sun shining and it made me so happy.

Seeing friends and family
Now that summer holidays are over, I've been planning my weekends to catch up with friends and family before the end of the year. I love spending time with old friends and colleagues, talking about the old days and new ones too. I'm smiling hard in this photo with my friend's son!

Christmas
I won't be singing Jingle Bells yet, but I will start my Christmas shopping! There's only 7 weeks left until Christmas, so there's only 7 weekends left of shopping to do. I've started making lists of what to get and have planned the secret santa for work too. Maybe it's not too early to start singing Christmas songs...

Getting back into routine
I'm a creature of comfort naturally, so getting back into a routine of work has made me very happy! I find my time is better spent when I'm fully in my routine and I'm more productive. Blogging is also part of my routine, so I'm aiming to get more reading and posts done over the next few weeks now!

What's made you happy recently?

Digital Marketing Diploma with Digital Marketing London

Isn't it crazy to think that Facebook is just 12 years old? And Instagram turned 6 years old in 2016? And that email marketing still has the highest conversion than any other channel? There's no doubt that digital marketing is a growing industry and one that brands don't want to be left behind on.

I work full time at a company called Brodie & Stone, a beauty brand owner and manufacturer in Digital Marketing. Note: I may do a separate post on my job role and what exactly I do in another post for another time! Onto the real topic of the post, I attended the Digital Marketing Diploma Course from the Digital Marketing London and Digital Marketing Institute and I thought I would share what I learnt and why, if you're interested in Digital Marketing as a career, you need this course.

The course is a boot-camp style, running from Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5pm with an hour lunch and a few breaks in between. It's intense, for what we learnt each day you're running 100mph and gaining valuable knowledge along the way.

Each day was split between two topics:

- Intro to Digital Marketing, this is where we ran through each topic for the day and discussed our current digital marketing strategy.

- Email Marketing, this area focused on newsletters, how to gain sign-ups and what are the best practices.

- SEO or Search Engine Optimization. I loved learning about SEO and how Google works to search every website for keywords, this part is crucial for being known on the web.

- PPC or Pay Per Click. Google also allows you to run ads to target specific search terms and provide amazing reports afterwards.

- Social Media Marketing Pt 1 and 2. From Facebook and Snapchat to advertising and top tips, we discussed everything social media - this was by far my best day!

- Digital Display. This lesson was all about how to advertise on blogs and websites and what the best positions and content are.

- Mobile Marketing. My mind was fully blown by the potential of Mobile Marketing, the possibilities in technology are endless.

- Analytics. Finding out who your customers are, where they come from and what they're searching is so important in Digital Marketing.

- Strategy. After learning all of the above, we learnt how to put our ideas and projects into practice to get the best results out of them.

With the Digital Marketing London team, the course is focused on Fashion and Beauty brands as the tutors were working in those industries at the time. In my opinion, this is why it's difficult to teach Digital Marketing at Uni because you need to be working in the industry to stay with the trend and as digital marketing is always evolving and changing, the syllabus would constantly change.

Now I have completed the course I will be taking an exam in the next few weeks to get my diploma. The exam is multiple choice and 3 hours long - a lot easier compared to my A-Levels and college exams!

My aim was to improve my basic knowledge of digital marketing and efficiently use my time as I manage a lot of brands and accounts. Now I feel fully prepared and ready for the opportunities in digital marketing.

If you're looking to learn more about digital marketing, I would really recommend this course. The tutors are brilliant and so helpful with any questions you may have and it's an amazing investment in your future. For more information, please visit the Digital Marketing London website.

What do you think of digital marketing?

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream and Primer Makeup Haul

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream and Primer Makeup Haul, NYX, Soft Matte Lip Cream, Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo, Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen, Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer, Beauty Haul, NYX Haul

As if I needed any more makeup products (that's a total lie, I always need more!) I fell to the temptation of NYX again. From my last NYX Lips and Brows Haul I've picked up two more Soft Matte Lip Creams. Usually I hate anything matte and drying on my lips, but this doesn't make them feel all craggy and cracked. They're super soft and creamy on the lips and last an age - I've only had to re-apply after eating and I love the process of applying makeup anyway!

Swatch Top: Copenhagen and Bottom: San Paulo

Copenhagen was a brave choice for me, I usually stick to pinks and nudes and hardly ever venture into red or burgundy. But I fancied a change and I do really love this shade - it's grown on me a lot! I haven't tried it with a lip liner yet and to be honest, I don't really know my lip shape enough anyway.... I'll be practising a lot more with it. It can come up patchy, so I apply a couple of layers to get the above colour.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream and Primer Makeup Haul, NYX, Soft Matte Lip Cream, Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo, Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen, Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer, Beauty Haul, NYX Haul

San Paulo is definitely in my territory, it's a beautiful hot pink shade that looks gorgeous once on! I did the drinks test and it passed, but after eating I needed to reapply although it didn't bother me too much. Compared to Copenhagen, San Paulo works for both day and night and I can't wait to wear it more.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream and Primer Makeup Haul, NYX, Soft Matte Lip Cream, Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo, Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen, Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer, Beauty Haul, NYX Haul

Without a doubt my eyeshadow always creases and I end up with lines, instead of beautifully blended eyeshadow! I read a lot of great reviews on Boots.com and I can definitely verify them that NYX Proof It! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer is fab. It has a doe foot applicator, so you sweep it across your eyelids and blend in with your fingers. You have to be quick to start applying and blending your eyeshadow, because once it's on, it's on. There's no lazy and long blending time with this product. If you've got greasy eyelids that crease all eyeshadows, then give this budget friendly primer a try.

What's your favourite product from NYX?

This Month I....

Is there ever a month when I'm not surprised at how quickly it went? It's a cliche to say it's a cliche, but it's so true! The last two weeks of October is where it all happened, I took part in a Digital Marketing bootcamp for one week and celebrated my big sister's wedding. Now I'll be having a nap until Christmas, okay?

This Month I... ate my way through this pizza. A few years ago we had this family-run italian restuarant open in my local village and it's always booked up each night. I love trying out independent restuarants and cafes and supporting local ones too, it makes a change from Prezzo and Nando's!

This Month I... bought even more NYX products. I have a full review coming up on Thursday, so make sure you read that! But spoiler alert: I love all their soft matte lip creams. They have such a good colour payoff and for the price, you can't really go wrong.

This Month I... read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It's a book that's been on my to-read pile for ages, but I always dismissed it as too hard and choose a lighthearted read instead. I am glad that I've now read it and it's got a firm place on my bookshelf now!

This Month I... watched The Girl On The Train. Possibly the film I've been most excited to see this year, it lived up to my expectation and more. Emily Blunt was the perfect choice for Rachel and did the character justice. And the ending - just amazing! Read my Film vs Book Review.

This Month I.... saw my big sister get married! I've been crazy excited for so long for the wedding day and it couldn't have been more perfect. All the preparations and everything was worth it to see her so happy! I'm sure I'll share more about the day in the next few weeks, it's time for me to sleep now haha.

What's October been like for you?
