Book Review: The Blue by Lucy Clarke

The third book review in three weeks? I know, I'm reading books at lightning speed recently. Catch up with A Dictionary Of Mutual Understanding by Jackie Copleton and The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop.

This week I bring you The Blue by Lucy Clarke. I came across this book by pure chance, I attended a meet-the-author event last April and our goody bags included random books, of which this was mine! The story revolves around one girl called Lana and her best friend Kitty who set off to the Philippines in search of freedom and a break from their standstill lives. There they discover The Blue, a travelling yacht manned by a crew of wanders and interesting characters. Behind each character on the boat is a secret, a dark side which one rough storm sets alight and changes the journey. Lana knows something is wrong with the crew when one of them mysteriously disappears overboard, but will she find out what actually happens?

The structure of the book is set in two time zones, the NOW and current time and the THEN - the past. It can be frustrating being in the NOW and knowing that something has happened in the THEN that affects Lana now, but it makes reading the book even more intriguing. I think Lana is a little naive at times, but her continued hope and dreams is something amazing and inspiring.

What I love about the book is that it left me wanting to travel, feel inspired and sail again. The way the author picks the best and worst parts of travelling by yacht across the most beautiful islands in Asia is guaranteed to make you want to book a holiday! Since reading a variety of books in the past few months, I've realised that each time I've finished reading that I want to feel something - whether it's sadness, love or inspiration, that's what a good book stands for me.

Have you read this book before? What are you currently reading?

Thanks for reading!
