BBC Tours Experience

BBC News Tours London

It's not every day you get to experience where national and international news is created for millions of people around the world to watch. But last weekend I headed up to the BBC Broadcasting House, near Oxford Circus Station, for a tour of the famous BBC studios.

We won the tickets in a raffle prize a few months back and being a trained journalist, I couldn't wait to get into the studios! Tickets are £15 each for an adult, which I think is a bargain compared to most London attractions, and the tour lasts for an hour and a half. It's not just the London studios who hold tours, but also Birmingham, Norwich, Cymru Wales and Northern Ireland to name a few!

There's 8 floors in the new BBC headquarters, 5 on ground level and 3 studios in the basement below. The BBC News is filmed on the ground floor, and you can just see the round studio on the right hand side of the image. It was quite as it was a Saturday on the day we went, but there's over 2,000 journalists working in this building each week, with the total staff amount at over 6,000. Wouldn't want to be in the canteen queue when they all come...

If you guys watch The One Show, the studio is actually tiny! Like there's enough room to swing a cat, but perhaps not a cow. Apparently it's all to do with the wide framed cameras and clever positioning which makes you think it is bigger than it actually is. Pretty cool to know that Joey from Friends has sat in the same seat I did!

The tour took us through a lot of different studios, we had a go at announcing the news and the weather - so much fun! Then had a go at recording a few BBC plays and creating the sound affects for them. We were shown where a few of the radio stations are played out, but we couldn't take photos in a lot of them which was annoying!

Obligatory photo opportunities of course...

Overall I had a great time at the BBC Tours. The guides were fantastic and really made everyone get involved and interact and I'd definitely recommend it if you're interested in the media and news.
