When Social Media Turned Dark

It's been a heavy debate ever since the emergence of the term 'social media' but recently I've started to question just how social it actually is and whether it's has a negative or positive impact on our lives.

Obviously for bloggers, it's an indispensable tool that we all rely on every day to help with our readership and exposure. Twitter gets your RTs for sharing a particular thought or post that day, Instagram helps with likes for that perfect Valencia filter of your lunch and Facebook is a happy medium of both with comments and likes.

On a whole, social media is defined as creating and sharing content on websites and applications or participate in social networking. Socialising with others from across the world is something that wouldn't have been possible ten years ago, now you can Skype with someone in Australia like they're right in front of you. But that can also lead to exposure by 'trolls' and negativity.

With this post in mind, I came up with a few different sides to social media:

1. Look Up

Even though it's not a recent example, Look Up was created by filmmaker Gary Turk about the finding the balance of becoming addicted to your phones and social networking to experiencing life. It's a definite eyeopener and well worth a few minutes to watch.

2. The Benefit Cosmetics Fiasco

Last week the Benefits Cosmetics UK account joined in on the hashtag #MakeAMovieAFatty. Besides the totally unacceptable hashtag (who seriously comes up with this stuff?!) Benefit joined in with their own films, which resulted in a backlash from followers. They did admit to it and apologise for offending anyone, but I think brands who have a large reputation should think twice before posting something controversial.

3. Em Ford's 'You Look Disgusting' Video

If you've been hiding under a rock (or on a sunny beach with no Wifi!) then you wouldn't have seen beauty blogger Em Ford's video highlighting reactions from social media about her acne. It's an inspiring and revealing video that highlights the two different sides of social media, how it can lift someone up and also put them down with a few simple words.

So there's just a few thoughts that I've had recently about social media. I'd love to know what you think of the above!
