Book Review: Another Way To Fall by Amanda Brooke

Book Review: Another Way To Fall by Amanda Brooke

You know those books that you bought years ago, intending to read straight away but never do? This is definitely one of mine. Another Way To Fall by Amanda Brooke got left on my bookshelf for a good year or two, before I picked it up recently and was intrigued by the blurb.

"This is the story of Emma's life. For three long years, she has battled with bravery and always hope. The one day Emma is told that they've reached the end of the road... So Emma begins to write the story of the life she has always wanted to live and something miraculous starts to happen."

The main character is Emma, a 29 year old with so much life and dreams ahead of her, as well as a battle with a brain tumour that is never going away. Realising she has little time left, she writes about the story of her life, not the one with the tumour but the one without. It starts with her getting the all clear and starting her life the way it should be.

It's incredibly heartbreaking. There's no way around it really, so if you're looking for a lighthearted book, then you may want to try somewhere else. Not to say it's all doom and gloom, it's actually quite a funny and smile-to-yourself style of book. Amanda Brooke flits effortlessly between Emma's present condition and her future life story with such well thought out characters that you're drawn into Emma's world, willing her to go on and fight her tumour.

Although I find some books which feature cancer can sometimes glorify it, this one keeps to the reality of the disease, which makes it a 'can't put down book'! Amanda shows how Emma's friends and family are just as affected by her brain tumour as she is, and is a totally relatable story. I think this is mainly down to Amanda's own son fighting, and sadly passing away from cancer when he was just three.

It's moving, heartbreaking and emotional, but Another Way To Fall is a gripping and must-read book in my opinion. It's almost like taking a peek into another world and getting lost within the words. A total must-read for me!

Have you read this book before? What's your recent must-read?

Thanks for reading!
