Campaign for Coloured Catwalks

The definition of beauty varies, especially in the über critical fashion industry. A recent debate about fashion designers not using enough black or Asian models in the recent Fashion Weeks has sparked controversy.

Models, Naomi Campbell and Iman, as well as modelling agent, Bethann Hardison, are calling for models to be judged on their talent, rather than their skin colour. Forming the Diversity Coalition, their open letter to the governing bodies of fashion condemning a list of well-known designers for discrimination, seems to have had an effect.

The Diversity Coalition was created in order to highlight racial prejudices in the fashion culture. Although the group aren’t calling the designers themselves racist, they still feel that the designers and system are ultimately responsible.

With famed black model, Jordan Dunn in agreement with the campaign to get more black models on the runway, she also quite rightly points out that “London’s not a white city, so why should out catwalks be white?”

At the recent New York Fashion Week, as little as 6 per cent of models were black, 13 per cent Asian and 13 shows featured no coloured models at all.

Despite this, there has been a significant increase in coloured models being used since the open letter was published before the fashion season. Thus this highlights the effective impact of campaigns such as this and designers taking notice in them.

Overall, the percentage of white models showcasing 4637 looks for the Spring/Summer 2014 catwalks this year decreased from 83 per cent to 80 per cent, a small but significant step in equality on the runway.

Image from Larsluan.co.uk

People may begin to question the longevity of this campaign, if this trend will eventually dissolve into the heavily saturated white fashion industry. However, Hardison holds faith in more diverse runways for the future. “It’s always come and go, come and go. What I hope is that it will come, and stay.”

The debate of discrimination opens up a stream of issues, including size, age and weight in the modelling industry, with more campaigns for plus size models to be featured.

If the fashion industry can take steps towards ending white dominated catwalks, as figures have shown, then perhaps there is a glimmer of hope for the whole culture to become more balanced.

Designers take note, black and Asian models are no longer taking no for an answer.

What's your opinion on this? Will it actually work? Is it a problem in the first place?

Image from Pinterest

Ooooh another quote Sunday! Definitely my favourite song from Eminem, seeing him at Reading Festival was unreal this summer. But this quote sticks out for me throughout the whole song.

People always say take the opportunities that are given to you and that they never find you but you've got to go out and find them. I found that since starting my journalism course I've had to work on my own initiative to find work experience (which may start off slightly late due to this 'massive storm'.... but that's another rant story!) and do my work.

But what annoys me is when people are lazy and don't believe that they can actually make something of themselves. For example, there's a guy at work who's been there for years after he left college as 'it didn't agree with me'. Obviously, education isn't for everyone but to hear that someone doesn't believe that they've got anymore to give than working at a rubbish job (trust me, it is...), makes me sad, but also so appreciative for the opportunities and support I have, allowing me to do what I want as a job.

Phew! Rant over!

Does anyone else feel the same as me? Do people who don't take opportunities frustrate you or just make you sad?

Hope you're all have a great week!

P.S As I've got work experience this week, involving late nights, I might not be able to post again before next weekend, but I'll try my best!

Do the tilt

Jacket: Zara
Jumper: H&M
Top: New Look
Jeans: M&S
Shoes and Scarf: Primark
Earrings: Accessorize

What is going on with my head tilt I don't know.... Although these were the best of the lot, so it could have been a lot worse for you! You know I said that I wear my converse too much? Well these were my alternative for the day, almost forgot I got them! I bought them when I went up to visit Nottingham Uni after seeing a girl wearing them (btw Primark in Nottingham, probably one of the cleanest I've been to ever!) Pretty boring outfit, but it was Wednesday, technically my last day of the week, so whatever my hands came into contact with was what I wore, lazy, I know!

Another day at work, which I'm getting so fed up with now. Asking, no demanding, us to work four shifts over Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day is just ridiculous. Especially as I've worked the last two Christmas Days and Boxing Days there, but apparently the weekday people have family things to go to, so now I don't have family things to go to?! Stupid is an understatement.

I'm braving the weather tonight and meeting up with Kamila who is back from Cardiff for her birthday, yay, and getting some pub grub then probably meeting up with everyone for a few drinks :) Sorted. Although I'm missing the typical Saturday night tv, is it anything really decent to watch? A certain singer contest programme is just getting on my nerves now, let the old dog die I say, been on for so long.

Thanks for reading!
Hope you're all having a great weekend!

Once One Door Shuts....

Jacket and Jeans: H&M
Shirt: New Look
Shoes: Converse
Bag: Zara

Word of warning: I've got a lot to chat about tonight, who knew so much could happen in 48 hours?!

Outfit first. Yup, those converses again. Until it stops raining, they're clued to my feet. I kinda like how the top half is smart with the coat and shirt but then the ripped jeans and trainers make it casual enough to not get mistaken for a teacher. Perfect balance!

Yesterday I had my interview for an internship, which I think went okay, I won't say anymore otherwise I'll jinx it! But I really don't think I've got a chance anyway, other people who applied have got more experience and knowledge than me anyway. After that I met up with a college friend to do some shopping and catch a cheeky Nandos, one away from half a chicken people! And I got my pumpkin costume for Halloween next week, prepare yourselves people.....

On my way home I got an email about the interview I was suppose to have today and well, to cut a long story short, they can't actually do work experience. Waste of time. The work asked if I could work the Friday and, like the lonely loser that I am, I said yes. But I did get another email about work experience with Essentials Magazine next week. Of course I jumped at the chance and the editor was so lovely, which makes me so so excited to be up in the big old smoke again.

Kinda makes me think that when one door shuts another opens and positive things happen to those who need it....

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Foot Drama

Coatagain: Asos
T-shirt: New Look
Jeans: H&M
Shoes: Converse
Necklace: Accessorize

Howdy everyone! So this was my outfit from Thursday evening when I met up with my friend to go for a curry and now I pretty much cannot take these jeans off! They're such good quality and are just my usual style of skinny jeans, well worth £30. Unfortunately my coatagain has been put aside for the time being, it doesn't protect rain and wind :( But my converse have been worn to death this week, too cold and wet for pumps but too warm in college for boots, slight foot drama, anyone else having this problem right now or is it just me going crazy?!

Since I last posted on Sunday I've had another super busy week. Monday was a normal college day but in the evening a guest speak for the National Union of Journalists was talking in Brighton. So after a quick burger from the Gourmet Burger Kitchen (One of the best I've had in a long time!) and a few drinks at the pub, I headed down to the venue with a few college friends. But man, are some journalists are angry! The guest speaker spoke about the Wiki leaks, the Leveson Inquiry etc. which caused a few debates, but even so quite interesting to listen to.

Tuesday involved my eyes clued to the screen for the Bake Off Final, yay for Francis! I did like Ruby but she messed up her decoration on her final bake, a shame really. Yesterday I was stuck in college doing a frustratingly dull article, with the a drink and the pub in the distance as my only light of hope!

Finally, today I'm off for an interview for an internship for The Latest magazine in Brighton, wish me luck! Then I'm back down to Brighton in the evening as Kamila is back from Cardiff for her birthday! Yay!

Phew, another mammoth post!
Hope you all have a good week!

To Kill A Mockingbird

Image from Pinterest

A quote from one of my favourite books. If you haven't read the novel, then why not?!! It's one of those books which has a hidden message. The main meaning I got from the book, and backs up this quote, is that it's wrong to harm someone that doesn't harm you, hence the mockingbird part.

Sometimes people can be quick to judge and see what they want to see, not giving the other person a chance. If anything it's taught me to not assume everything and not to judge a book by its cover (excuse the pun!)

Definitely a book staying on my book shelves though! I am trying to read more classic books rather than the same chic lit over and over again (nothing wrong with a bit of girly book!) anyone got any recommendations?

Hope you all have a lovely week!

Trainers and a Mac

Jacket: H&M
Top: New Look
Shoes: River Island
Scarf and socks: Primark

And the wedge trainers return.... unfortunately I didn't think about the four flights of stairs I'd have to climb to get to my lessons and the massive hill up to the station, definitely felt the burn! haha. They just looked so sad and neglected at the back of my wardrobe, as my converse have taken over my life (and feet). But that's enough about my shoes and their feelings.

I did pull down the socks as I got a few weird looks on the train, well a few more than normal! But I do love adding a pair of trainers to my mac, sometimes the mac with a pair of pumps can look a bit too formal. So the trainers kinda bring it back to the casual/smart style, keeping it to my student roots!

Today I've had a right day at work, giving me all the crap jobs within a really short time frame, plus the rain didn't help much! Now I've just got an afternoon filled with work that I need to catch up on and hopefully I'll be going to Lewes Bonfire Night this evening with my family. It's basically a kiddy friendly version of November 5th with torchlit processions around the estate and a massive fireworks display at the end, fingers cross it won't still be raining!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Clothes, Make up and Chocolate.... all a girl needs.

After a couple of stressful weeks studying in Brighton, I needed to go shopping. Especially after I haven't actually been in to the centre since starting college, except for the odd Starbucks....

Dress: Primark

First pit stop was Primark, well after the obligatory Starbucks. Full of jumpers and coats that I really don't need, I manage to steer myself away from them and towards the dresses. I only picked this up by chance, but I'm thinking maybe adding my red loafers, red accessorises and my mac coat for a couple of interviews I have next week, sorted!

Jeans: H&M

Any girl will know the pain of finding a pair of jeans, luckily H&M came to my rescue pretty quickly. Before I've tried on jeans there that are too big or small (apparently they don't do 30 30) but I managed to fit into these so well, I can't actually believe it.

Dare I say that I've found the perfect jeans?! Kinda like the Leigh jeans from Topshop but a lot thicker and better quality. For £29.99, pretty good going, although my mum felt the need to point out that they have holes in and that I should return them....

Chocolate: Hotel Chocolat

The best chocolate company in the land. Without fail this will be gone in a couple of hours. Every Christmas my mum gets me a mini selection pack..... which suddenly disappears by the time it comes to New Years Eve!

Boots: Aussie Heat Protection Spray, Condition and Shampoo

I did buy these last few beauty bits last week, so they don't really count, but I thought I'd chuck them in anyway! Probably the only hair care that agrees with my crazy hair, so I'm always repurchasing whenever they're on sale. The Heat Protection spray is a new formula which I only bought because I couldn't find my usual one, but it has more in it, so hopefully it's better value!

Boots: Rimmel London Wake Me Up Concealer and Maybelline Falsies Mascara

The famous Wake Me Up range has been across so many blogs, people have just gone crazy for them. I'm quite picky with my skin products, as I want to keep it a light and natural as possible but my dark under eye circles have always been a problem. The Collection concealer is slightly too thick and cakey sometimes, but this formula is so smooth and lightweight that I'm so glad a nabbed the last one in my shade!

The mascara was a slight splurge. Having not bought a mascara in a while and considering most of my mascara ends up clumped underneath my eyes, a new waterproof mascara seems the best idea. But, oh my, aren't they a pain to take off?!! Ripping most of my poor eyelashes out :( But it does solve the whole panda eye issue.

Thanks for reading! Hope you've all had a great week!

The Fluff

Jacket, Jumper and Belt: Primark
Jeans: M&S
Shoes: New Look
Earrings: Accessorize

And the OOTD posts with the fluffy jumper begins..... What's it like to stroke a polar bear? Stroke this jumper and you'll see!

Primark have again caused a storm with these jumpers. Although they haven't got it all right, I picked up a size 8 and 6, I'm usually an 8 but tried on the 6 too, just to make myself feel good if it actually fitted! haha (Don't lie, we've all done it at some point...) I didn't even bother with the 8, I have to wear a belt with the 6 because it's too big, so I'm hoping that mother shrinks it in the wash, like she does with everything! Can't fault the thickness and pure pleasure I (and others) get from stroking it, although I do leave a trail of purple fluff everywhere, kinda like Hanzel and Gretel but with a sheep instead of bread.

This week has been another explosion of travelling to and from Brighton and mini breakdown from all the work and pressure, but praise the Lord for four day weekends. Besides the stress of this week, I've actually enjoyed the lectures and the people I'm with aren't too bad either, making life slightly easier.

I did drive back down to Brighton today, purely for research for an article but I may have been side tracked by Zara and Primark calling me, more on that tomorrow! I'm also off out for an indian with my friend who I haven't seen in yonks, so a long catch up is expected. Feels like I haven't sat still since the summer!

Hope you're all having a good week!

From Pinterest

Ooohh I do love a good quote I do. Scrolling around on Pinterest is a new thing that I do when I'm bored, plus all the autumn/winter boards make me all excited for it now, although the food boards do make me hungry, wonder how they got on to there.... :(

I'm in total agreement with this quote, as I believe that whatever happens in life, you'll learn something from it. Like the saddo that I am, whenever I find a really good quote I'll add it to my photos and then use it as a screensaver, probably better than having my ugly mug on it, scare people off! haha

Have you guys got any special quotes that you like?
Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

Weekend Outfit

Weekend Outfit

Weekend Outfit via Polyvore

So I've joined all the other bloggers in creating a post using Polyvore. It wasn't exactly intentional, I didn't take many OOTD posts this week and today's outfit consists of trackie bottoms and a hoodie, not exactly blogable (is that even a word?!)

After spending time browsing all the clothes, which is probably my bank account's worst nightmare, I settled on these few pieces of my ideal weekend outfit. Despite working every weekend, I usually go into town shopping or just meeting up with friends, so it's never a ball gown event, if you get what I mean.

I do love a simple tee paired with skinny jeans and a ton of jewellery, my favourite has to be the watch, it's from Fossil but wayy out of my student budget unfortunately :( BUT the jacket is apparently on sale in New Look.... so there's always a bright side! A good satchel means I can stuff all the non-essential things that I feel like I should have just in case and it won't break, after numerous Primark school bags have broken on me!

I think I'll definitely be using Polyvore more, a step up from my homemade collages really! What do you guys think of this outfit? What's your usual weekend outfit?

Thanks for reading!

My oh-so-exciting week

Jacket: Primark
Top and Shoes: New Look
Skirt: America Apparel
Necklace: Accessorize

Hey guys! Another week gone, another set of outfit posts to show you all!

Since wearing this last Monday my news years resolution of wearing more skirts and dresses has gone out the window! But I've got a ton of autumnal outfits that I'm dying to wear as the weather has turned all boring and grey. I'm still having a play around with my photo formats and how to work them etc as at the moment my tripod consists of seven books and my face powder to keep my lens straight!

Monday was the quietest day with just the usual college day but since then it's been non stop and I've pretty much lost what day of the week and what time it is. Tuesday being my longest day, I of course booked myself in to review a restaurant for Made in Brighton, which was a gorgeous Mexican restaurant called La Choza with some of the best Mexican nosh that's ever passed my mouth.

Wednesday was pretty full again, another article for Brighton Lite done and a social media talk with Sarah Booker Lewis from The Argus, giving us advice and tips on how to use social media websites etc. Then another evening with the guys, pizza, drink and ring of fire, you can do the very messy maths.

Thursday was pretty much a waste of a day, I got back at around 12ish aiming to do my La Choza review and college work, but then we had another bloomin' power cut! No wifi, no tv, radio, ANYTHING! So I napped for about three hours until it came back on, it's a hard life. In the evening I caught a cheeky Chinese takeaway with Kamila and watch Harry Potter (as usual).

I finally had that annoying eye test today. I hate touching my eyes in any way, it just creeps me out but luckily the optician didn't need to get that close as it was all straight forward as my eye sight is really good. Since then I've just been catching up with everything, but there's never enough hours in the day! Gahh! Probably should stop rambling on here then....

New Years Resolution

Jacket and Skirt: Primark
Top and Hoody: H&M
Shoes: New Look

I've decided on a New Years Resolution, more than half way through the year, to not just wear my black skinny jeans to death and actually wear a skirt or a dress once in a while. I do adore this skirt, it's so cute and just the right length for me not to be conscious that everyone can see up it! I've wanted to try wearing my maxi skirt in the autumn/winter - possibly with my converse - but I'm not too sure about it!

My lazy Sunday has involved working in the morning, stuffing my face with a roast dinner and looking at all the Christmas decorations in my local garden centre with my mum, sister and her boyfriend, where we all had to find the most tackiest decoration. Pretty fun, I think the worse was the turkey hat... (don't ask!) I finally caught up on Downton from last week, Lady Rose is so going to get caught, it's obvious! On to X Factor and finishing my shorthand homework, always leaving it to the last minute...

Hope you all had a good weekend!

Top Love

Jacket: Primark
Top and Shoes: New Look
Jeans: M&S
Necklace: H&M

Man, I cannot stop gushing over this top! I exchanged it for a jumper after Kamila bought me a jumper for my birthday that I already had . I'll try and describe it the best I can, a pink shimmery leopard print top, with a high neck, kinda like the top half of some 1920s flapper dresses. The only down side is how much it bloomin' creases! Worse than a shirt. But even that can't stop me from wearing (and staring) at it. This was what I wore last weekend when I went out for a meal with Kamila and a couple of drinks with the guys, pretty casual but still pretty :)

A quite boring day today. Work in the morning. I don't really talk much about work, as it's not that interesting, but as it's mostly work where you're on your own so I daydream A LOT and it's all outside, which is so much better than being stuck in an office all day! Plus the work isn't too bad, once you know it you get really quick at it all. Once I got back, I found out my dad had switched off the Wifi as we're swapping networks, which meant no twitter, youtube, blogger, anything! So what did I do.... homework. Desperate times. But it does mean that my evening is now free for X Factor, a moisturising face mask and painting my nails, the joys of being an eighteen year old girl with no friends left in town! haha

Hope you're all having a good weekend!

Jacket: Zara
Top and Shoes: New Look
Jeans: M&S
Bag: H&M

Why hellooo there! How are we? Today has been a productive-ish day. Started off with a much needed haircut, all the dead ends and chin length fringe needed to go. Then I was suppose to go for an eye test, but apparently I got the wrong day. First off I called last Friday booking a test for ONE WEEKS TIME therefore today. Secondly the lady decided to speak to me like I'm an idiot (which some of you may be thinking I am now... haha) asking if I've got the wrong place and if she wants me to write down my appointment. Frustrating. But I did get a few beauty bits in town, Aussie shampoo, conditioner and hair spray, Maybelline Falsies mascara and the famous Rimmel London Wake Me Up Concealer, which I've been dying to get my mitts on for ages!

By the time I got home a lovely package was waiting for me. Remember I posted about ordering a new camera yesterday? Well it came TODAY. Supposedly 3-5 days delivery, but I guess you get a quicker service when you know the company and guy delivering it to you! Now the rest of my day is going to be spent taking (and failing) 'artsy' photos and sorting through all my shorthand homework, they never said being a journalist would be easy.

Hope you're all have an amazing week!

Age is just a number.... or is it?

Ageism Definition: a type of discrimination that involves prejudice against people based upon their age.
Being an eighteen year old living in the South of England you may perceive me as naïve to the way of the world, the good, bad and ugly. But we may notice more than you realise. Addressing the whole ageism debate as a whole is too vague, so I’ll use my own experience to be more specific in my meaning.

Since the age of five I’ve been surrounded by peers of similar age to myself up until now, where the boundaries of school and sixth form have been released into the big wide world. I have experienced social circles with people older and younger than me, but the gap between learning capability and style of writing wasn’t as apparent before.

Starting college on a course where I’d hopefully emerge as a journalist, I was ignorant enough to believe that it would mostly be people of my own age. Although it was slightly daunting to be put in lectures with people who are five or more years older than me, we were all in the same boat at the beginning. Perhaps the pace was quicker than I had expected but I could handle it.

It became obvious that I was inexperienced in comparison when we began to discuss our backgrounds and work experience. You’re probably thinking “Well, you shouldn’t be comparing yourself to them anyway” but in a competitive field like journalism it’s pretty hard not to.

Then the pair work came, where a joint article was to become the result. With different specialisms, different styles of writing were expected but that wasn’t the problem, the vocabulary gap highlighted my youth and how much further they were academically. Thus causing all your hopes to be dashed in one single key.

Like that old saying, there are always two sides to a coin. Rather than complaining about the differences of writing styles, I have been learning and how I can adapt to better myself from them. Further to that, I’ve been learning about their lifestyles and previous jobs and education they had undertaken, whereas before all my peers had the similar Saturday jobs and hobbies.

Ageism is a term I think of very lightly now, being welcomed into a group of older people with no judgement of your age has been refreshing and puts my faith back into humanity. Perhaps I drew the good straw, either way I am grateful for this new experience.

Pub Life

Jacket: Zara
Shirt and Leggings: Topshop
T-Shirt Dress: H&M
Shoes: New Look

Another college week done and dusted. Seems to be getting quicker and quicker every week! Probably didn't get off to the best of starts on Monday after a pain in the arse headache forced me to go home early (5 o'clock if you're asking...). Tuesday rolled round and I stayed at my bros which was good coz I haven't seen him in ages and it meant that I got an extra hour in bed as he lives close to Brighton! A very happy Rhiannon. Wednesdays are 100% my favourite days, not so many lessons and it's much more creative than the other days. This week I published this article here. Wednesdays also mean PUB TIME. No college the next day means I don't have to worry about getting back early, although when all your trains are delayed going out of Brighton, there was a slight worry that I wouldn't get home at all last night. Even so, it's good to go and bond with the guys whilst experiencing the Brighton pub life!

Today is the day to catch up on work and general bits. Exciting news, I've finally ordered my Canon 1100D camera after what feels like an eternity of researching and comparisons. I just need to get the tripod and then I'm all ready to go! Hopefully they'll be better than these grainy photos, although I'm not entirely sure you will want to see my morning face in too much detail....

Hope you're all having a good week!
